Infant CPR mannequin choking first aid

FREQUENTLY-ASKED QUESTIONS

We know it can be confusing when deciding what first aid course is right for you or your organization - so here are some answers to commonly-asked questions.  And, as always, please get in touch with any questions!

Getting trained equips you with the knowledge and skills to respond confidently in emergencies, potentially saving lives. You will be ready to act swiftly at home, at work or elsewhere to handle cardiac arrests, choking, and other injuries, providing essential care before 911 arrives. Being first-aid trained can enhance job prospects. Many industries are OSHA-mandated to provide first-aid training. Businesses that offer first aid training to their staff see higher employee morale and retention - and can benefit from lower insurance premiums.

Well, your course will be very thorough but engaging. There will be time to ask questions and a conversational atmosphere will be encouraged. We'll go at your pace and make sure nobody is left behind. Our instructor has 20+ years of teaching experience. We're super flexible and come to your location. The mannequins are modern and sanitized prior to each class. Some even say the classes are relaxed and enjoyable and we are easy to work with. But don't believe them.

Each skill will be clearly presented and demonstrated then each class participant will have the opportunity to ask questions before practicing new skills on a modern mannequin with helpful feedback from the instructor. At the end of the class we'll put all the new skills together and practice first aid scenarios. The classes are thorough and enjoyable.

While there are many different classes available, the 'baseline' American Red Cross First aid - CPR - AED course teaches how to recognize and safely handle the following (adults and children scenarios):

            • Cardiac arrest (performing CPR and AED use)
            • Choking
            • Sudden illness (including heat-stroke, shock, asthma, anaphylaxis, heart attack, opioid overdose, diabetic emergencies.
            • Life-threatening bleeding
            • Burns
            • Poison exposure
            • Head, neck and spinal injuries
            • OPTIONAL: American Red Cross Skill Boosts to add and enhance the skills above (see below).

Please get in touch for more details, and to find a course that is right for you.

CPR and AED techniques differ somewhat from adults to children to babies so this course will teach you how to act regardless of the age of the patient. Both infant and adult mannequins are used to practice. Even if you are learning CPR for work purposes we highly recommend also gaining the skills required to handle emergencies involving children because you never know....

Absolutely. These courses are slightly shorter than the standard adult and pediatric courses. Please contact us if you are interested.

There's a lot to learn, for sure. But it's worth learning. And we will guide you through the process in an accessible and enjoyable way. People are often surprised how much we have covered by the end of the class, by methodically and patiently reviewing and practicing the skills needed to save a life.

Not at all. It's our job to bring almost all the equipment. You would just need to provide a safe, clean space in which we can lay out some mannequins and practice the skills. Tables and chairs would be great but we can cover that if necessary. If you are interested in a class please get in touch and we'll send on a detailed list of what will be required.

This class (taught by an American Red Cross licensed instructor) provides - upon successful completion - an American Red Cross certificate which is valid for two years. This certificate meets almost all OSHA requirements. We also offer non-certified classes for those simply looking to gain the skills required in an emergency without needing a certificate.

The class is held in your home, place of business or your organization's space. No need to travel to a classroom. River Prepared First Aid will bring all the equipment needed to gain the required skills. What's more, we will tailor the classes to your specific group or business and location.

Many of our classes are offered as a full in-person course or as a 'blended class'. A blended class has an online component (completed at home) consisting of videos and presentations which introduce the main concepts, then the in-person segment consists of hands-on skills practice with instructor-led feedback.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - the act of compressing the chest in someone who is suffering a cardiac emergency. It keeps oxygenated blood moving through the body - including the brain - until advanced help arrives. You will practice on one of our modern mannequins which provides instant feedback as you perform compressions.

Automated External Defibrillator - a portable device which can deliver an electric shock, via pads placed on the chest, to victims in cardiac arrest. AEDs are available in many public locations such as malls, gyms, train stations and schools as well as an increasing number of workplaces. AEDs have saved many lives. Your training at River Prepared First Aid will equip you to use an AED with confidence

An American Red Cross certified course which either adds new skills (not covered in the 'standard' courses) or augments existing skills by going into more depth. These Skill Boosts can be added on to a First Aid - CPR - AED course for those who do not currently have a certificate. Highly recommended

Our standard class minimum is three people. But if you would like a private class please do get in touch and we'll do our best to accommodate.

It's possible to book a class for any day of the week, early or late!

Our videos are available in Spanish as well as English, and classes can be conducted in Spanish as well!

Yes, of course. Videos are available subtitled. We can change protocols to accommodate mobility issues and so on. Please advise us when booking a class if any accommodations might be needed, and let's discuss options. It is worth noting that given the physical nature of performing CPR, there is a point at which certification will be difficult - but we will do everything we can to make sure that everyone gets the most thorough training available on the market.

Within twenty-four hours as a rule. If it's urgent please let us know and we'll get it over to you lickety-split. Certificates will be emailed out.

We're nice so we'll be as flexible and accommodating as possible. But of course we do have a few parameters....

  • Classes or enrollment can be rescheduled or cancelled (with a full refund if applicable) with at least 48 hours' notice from the scheduled class start time. With less than 48 hours' notice no refunds will be offered for cancellations - but rescheduling is available: Classes or enrollment can be rescheduled at no cost with at least 24 hours' notice. No refunds or rescheduling is available with less than 24 hours' notice. We lock in time slots that we could use to teach other classes or students so we hope you understand these terms.
  • Digital assets such as online course access codes are not refundable.
  • Invoices (as applicable) will be sent via email within 48 hours of class. Usual terms are 30 days unless otherwise agreed upon.
  • Kids are more than welcome to enroll in a class - but we will ask for a parent or guardian to provide permission. Please do not bring unenrolled kids to classes. Please check in with us to make sure that any kids will be able to perform the skills needed for certification.
  • Classes begin on time! If you are more than five minutes late to class we cannot guarantee that you will be able to participate and we reserve the right to refuse entry. We would not offer a refund in this scenario.
  • If the class is a 'blended' class (part online and part in-person) then the online portion must be completed prior to the in-person class in order to participate. No exceptions, and no refund will be offered if the online part of the class has not been completed.
  • No refunds will be offered for those who do not attend a scheduled class.
  • We do reserve the right to cancel classes due to unforeseen circumstances or very low enrollment - the latter is to make sure that classes are compliant for certification. If this extremely rare event were to happen we will contact you via email / phone and offer full refunds or the option to reschedule. And our apologies.
  • Classes may require participants to kneel for short periods of time to perform CPR compression practice on manikins. Just a couple of minutes in total. Demonstrating competency in this skill is a criterion for certification. If you have any concerns about this please get in touch prior to booking. Of course, certification is optional and we can still practice the skills.
